Best Water Purifier Buying Guide India

Unfortunately, we’re living in a world where everything, including the water is polluted and we had no choice except to depend on purified drinking water tins to fulfill our basic needs, else we could face some health issues due to the impurities in the water.

And, that is where the water purifiers come handy.

You don’t have to depend on bottled water anymore as they also contain some sort of impurities in them.

Having a water purification system at your home will not only help you save money on frequent bottled water purchases but also provide you even more purified drinking water which is free from germs and bacteria by up to 99.99% efficiency.

So, before spending your hard earned money on purchasing a new water purifier for your home, it is highly advised to know the features to choose based on your requirements.

1. Types of Water Purifiers

There are 3 different types of water purifiers in the market as of now. Let us look into each one of them in detail.

1.Gravity Based Water Purifiers

These water purifiers make use of gravity in order to clean the water off impurities. They are ideal for localities where there is low TDS water i.e., your source of water comes from either municipality or treated sources.

They can remove all microorganisms from the water effectively.

Since these purifiers do not require electricity or power to work, they are priced low and at the same time does not offer the purification as effective as the electric ones.

2.UV Water Purifiers

These water purifiers make use of Ultraviolet radiation technology in order to clean the water.

They are a mix of low cost activated carbon filters and expensive RO purifiers. These water purification machines can deactivate water-borne, disease causing organisms effectively but cannot remove heavy metals and chemicals like arsenic, nitrates and iron.

Above all, you’ll still feel the smell of contaminated water even after purification.

3.RO Water Purifiers

These water purifiers make use of Reverse Osmosis technology in order to remove number of water contaminants and chemicals like arsenic, nitrate, copper, iron, lead etc…

However, they are not so effective in removing the bacteria and viruses like the UV purifiers does.

Since no single type of water purifier is able to completely purify the water of harmful impurities, it is therefore suggested to buy those with a combination of these technologies – RO + UV or RO + UF or RO + UV + UF.

2. Sources of Water Pollution

Our main source of water are the rivers which descend from the melting snowcaps.

On their way to the plains, these rivers travel through different regions and gather salts and minerals when they pass through rocks and sand.

These salts comprise of vital nutrients like sodium, chlorine, potassium, magnesium, nitrates and phosphates.

Sources of Water Pollution in India
Chemical wastes from the industries get mixed in the river water.

These minerals form the major component of the TDS, also called as Totally Dissolved Solids. We shall discuss about the TDS in detail in the later part of this article.

Till there, the water was absolutely fine to drink.

But, with the human intervention such as mixing wastes like sewage, chemical wastes from industries (arsenic, lead, iron, mercury, etc..) and other impurities into the water, it becomes unhealthy to drink.

People who drink such polluted water are prone to water-borne diseases like dysentery, cholera etc

So, drinking pure water has become compulsory for our well-being.

3. Different Types of Impurities in Drinking Water

Pure water has no taste, odour and is soft and complete with hydration.

Whereas, the polluted water is hard to drink as it contains impurities such as heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, dissolved organic compounds and microbial entities.

High level buildup of such impurities can cause serious illness and damage to our human body.

In order to keep a check on the level of such impurities, the Government has set a TDS level corresponding to the water source.

Generally, you’ll see that the groundwater, rainwater and stream water is more pure (has less TDS levels) when compared with the water that is stored in your overhead tanks or tap water.

4. What is TDS? How Much is Acceptable for Drinking?

TDS, as we’ve already discussed, is the Total Dissolved Solids/salts that determine whether the quality of the water is good, bad or worse for human consumption.

It is used to calculate the hardness or softness of the water.

TDS components include anions, cations, phosphate, calcium, nitrate, lead, arsenic, mercury, fluorides, iron and other heavy metals.

Heavy metals found in drinking water
Different types of heavy metal found in the water

It is represented by ppm (parts per million) unit.

Most of the RO water purifiers include a TDS controller option that automatically checks the TDS level regularly in order to provide you with clean and safe drinking water.

Water with a TDS value of up to 300 ppm is generally safe for drinking.
TDS LevelsHuman Consumption
1 to 300 ppmExcellent & Safe
300 to 600 ppmGood
600 to 900 ppmAcceptable
900 to 1200 ppmPoor
> 1200 ppmUnfit and not acceptable

Although, the TDS level of the water is <300, it does not mean that it is the best drinking water as it can have a high concentration of arsenic or mercury in addition to a lower level of other salts.

Such water is not palatable and hence, in such circumstances, water purifiers come handy in eliminating those impurities as they pass the water through multiple purification stages to make it more purer to drink.

5. Types of Water Purification Technologies

1.Sediment Filter

It is usually located outside the purifier machine. It’s main function is to not allow the visible suspended particles and larger impurities inside the machine for further filtration.

This increases the life of your RO membrane as it doesn’t need to work on that front.

Generally, water treated by municipalities does not contain larger impurities. So, if the input water source is the municipality water (clear), you don’t need the sediment filter.

2.Pre-Activated Carbon Filter

The pre-activated carbon filter removes all the organic and other volatile compounds from the water. These are what gives the water its bad odour.

3.RO or Reverse Osmosis

This is the main or most important stage of water filtration.

Normally, the water does not move from a higher concentration to lower concentration when travelling through a semipermeable membrane.

And, in such circumstances, you need to use a pump in order to push the water through the RO membrane. This principle is known as Reverse Osmosis.

The RO membrane works effectively to remove all types of impurities such as heavy metals, TDS, pesticide residue and biological impurities like viruses, bacteria and microorganisms.

As a result of reverse osmosis, the impure water goes down the drain, while the filtered water will be passed through the next stage i.e., UV chamber for further filtration.

4.Ultraviolet (UV) Protection

The RO filtered water contains some traces of bacteria and viruses whose molecular weight is less than 20.

So, the UV chamber uses ultraviolet radiation to kill such microorganisms and make the water 100% safe to drink.

5.Ultrafiltration

In this next stage of Ultrafiltration, any traces of residual impurities will be removed.

6.Post-Activated Carbon Filter

To improve the taste of the water further, the water is now passed through this post-activated carbon filter to remove volatile organic compounds which cause the bad odour.

7.TDS Controller

As we’ve seen, the RO water purifier makes the water 100% pure for drinking by passing it through multiple filters for purification.

But, it eliminates almost 90% of the TDS from the water (input source).

It includes all the good minerals and healthy salts like magnesium, calcium etc… which are needed for the overall growth of our body.

This is where the TDS controller plays a vital role in separating the input water source into two parts, A and B.

The Part A water goes through the RO membrane while the Part B water goes through the UV/UF membrane which kills the microorganisms but does not alter the TDS.

The TDS controller carefully mixes both the filtered waters together thereby increasing the pH value as well as TDS levels for safe consumption.

8.Mineralizer

Though the TDS controller is good, it has a disadvantage. Since it mixes a part of input water into the RO water, there is a chance of contaminating the RO purified water.

And, that is where the mineralizes comes handy. It releases all the minerals that are lost during the RO filtration process back into the RO purified water and improves the quality of the output water.

So, you don’t have to worry about losing minerals while drinking RO purified water.

6. Factors to Consider While Buying a Water Purifier

First and foremost, you should test the water source at your home as it helps you determine which type of water purification technology to choose.

  1. Perform the TDS evaluation test and calculate the TDS levels in the water. The more it is, the more stages of filtration it requires.
  2. In case, if you’re living in an area surrounded by factories, then it is better to conduct a chemical test of the water as well to determine the amount of industrial pollutants in the water.
  3. Decide the budget for your water purifier. Remember that high-end water purifiers may be costly at the start, but will save a lot in terms of maintenance and filter replacements in the future. So, choose a branded purifier machine.
  4. If at all you’re still in confusion, simply go for the best water purifier with RO + UV + UF technologies.

Water Purifier FAQs

How much water is wasted while using an RO water purifier?

The water wastage depends mainly on the quality of the input water. The higher the TDS of the water source, the higher the wastage.

Generally, 2 liters of water is wasted to produce 1 liter of pure drinking water.

How do you utilize rejected water?

The water that is rejected while purification contains almost 95 to 99% of impurities and hence is not fit for human consumption.

However, you can use it for gardening, bathroom flushing, cleaning utensils, mopping floors, cleaning toilets etc…

ABS Plastic or Stainless Steel Storage Tank – Which purifier is better?

Generally, the storage tanks of a water purifier comes with a capacity of 7 liters or more based on your budget.

So, you’ll need a strong material to hold such amounts of weight.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a recyclable and non-toxic thermoplastic polymer material that is capable of withstanding high temperature fluctuations with ease.

Whereas, the steel tank could also withstand high-temperature range but is heavier compared to ABS plastic. It is also not so durable when compared with ABS.

The steel tanks require more maintenance than ABS plastic tanks.
Hence, water purifiers with ABS plastic tank is preferable mostly.

Is it okay to buy non-branded RO water purifier?

Well, I personally do not suggest that. Reputed brands provide better quality and service when compared with non-reputed brands.

They may be cheaper but not always healthier options. So, better invest for your future.

Do you need a mineralizer or mineral guard?

Well, the short answer is Yes. An RO water purifier, though it provides pure water, it removes the essential minerals from the water along with harmful chemicals.

So, the output water has a bland taste and misses the nutrient value.

The mineralizer is an extra stage of filtration where the missing minerals will be added back to the water to maintain the pH balance.

And, Mineral Guard is a name coined by the brand ‘Aquaguard’ for its water purifiers.

What is the annual maintenance cost of a water purifier?

AMC or annual maintenance cost is generally borne by the manufacturers as long as your product is under the warranty period.

Once the warranty is expired, you’ll need to shell out between Rs.3000 to Rs.4000 per annum for its maintenance.

This cost may change from one brand to another. So, check with your manufacturer about the AMC before purchasing.

Which water purifier brand offers best after-sales service?

All the top brands like Kent, LG, Blue Star, Livpure, Eureka Forbes etc.. provide the best after-sales support.

However, you can check the local classifieds or online e-commerce reviews where people share their opinions about the service issues of different brands.

Will I get warranty if I buy from online stores like Amazon & Flipkart?

Absolutely, yes. The warranty is valid even if you purchase the water purifier online.

Once the product is delivered, just call the customer care with your reference number and the service guy will come & install your water purifier for free of cost.

He’ll also regularly visit your home for occasional servicing during the warranty period.

So, you don’t have to worry about warranty or servicing even though you purchase it online.

Conclusion:

That’s all friends! Hope you understood the different factors to consider while purchasing the best water purifier for home in India.

We’ve tried my best to include only the high-quality RO water purifiers in India with multi-stage filtration that are efficient enough to purify the borewell water by removing harmful bacteria and viruses.

These water purifiers also come with TDS controller & mineralizer, thus making the water tastier to drink.

Now, its your time to pick the one that suits your budget and specific TDS needs.
